Bonnyrigg's extra man pays dividend

Bonnyrigg ROSE beat fellow Junior Super League side Kelty Hearts in last night's Fife & Lothians Cup second-round tie by a solitary second-half goal from Sean Martin.

The home side had the better of the first half with Kelty keeper Alan Fleming keeping them in the game with a couple of fine saves from Sean Grady and Ryan McCallum.

Bonnyrigg didn't have it all their own way, though, with Kelty's impressive Ross Morrison almost catching everyone out with an audacious chip from 40 yards.

With two evenly-matched sides, it was no surprise when they reached the break goalless.

The turning point came in the 54th minute when Kelty's Andy Rollo was sent off for a last-man tackle on James Steele. The Fife side continued to hold firm, however, until the 81st minute when Bonnyrigg finally made the breakthrough.

Grady played a superb ball through to Martin, who outpaced the Kelty defence to create space for a right-foot shot which sailed past Fleming.

There then followed a flurry of bookings as Kelty pushed hard for an equaliser to take the game to a penalty shoot-out but Bonnyrigg held firm and took their place in the next round where they face Sauchie away.
