Bob MacIntyre facing Sunday slog in Texas before heading for Masters

Weather problems leave Oban man with 30 holes to play as he bids to stay out in front in San Antonio

Bob MacIntyre is facing an energy-sapping Sunday in San Antonio before turning his attention to the 90th Masters in Augusta.

It follows the third round of the Valero Texas Open being hit by bad weather on Saturday, leaving MacIntyre with the prospect of having to play 30 holes on Sunday.

The Oban man, who led by four shots at the halfway stage after setting a new tournament record for 36 holes since the event moved to TPC San Antonio, had only played six holes on Saturday when play was suspended at 11.51am local time.

The action was then abandoned for the day at 4.52pm, with the entire field yet to complete the third round.

Tournament officials have announced that play is scheduled to resume on Sunday at 7.45am local time.

The final-round tee times are scheduled for approximately 10am-12pm off two tees, with the groups not being changed after the third round.

“The golf course just can't take anymore,” said PGA Tour chief referee Ken Tackett of the decision to call it a day. “We're already over an inch of rain. The prediction was somewhere around a quarter.

“We thought the front was going to come through quickly and we would be playing golf in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the system has stalled out on us and we continue to get these heavy showers with some embedded lightning.”

It sounds as though there is no guarantee that the 72 holes will be completed as planned on Sunday.

‘Weather is not great for Sunday’

“The weather is not great tomorrow, but it's better than today,” added Tackett. “There's a 30 per cent chance roughly that we'll have showers throughout the day, a low likelihood of lightning.”

MacIntyre’s overnight lead has been halved after the 29-year-old covered the six holes he played in one under whereas Ryder Cup team-mate Ludvig Aberg, one of his playing partners, picked up three shots over the same stretch.

MacIntyre is bidding to land a third PGA Tour win while Aberg is chasing a touch of redemption after his back-nine collapse in The Players Championship last month.

Englishman Matt Wallace and Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune both sit four shots behind MacIntyre when play resumes, with another English player, Marco Penge, among five players on 10 under after making six birdies on the spin to storm to the turn in 30.
