Basketball: Young Scots hit heights at Meadowbank

The Scottish boys reached the final and the girls finished a very creditable third in the 2013 International Summer Slam Under-14 Basketball event at Meadowbank in Edinburgh.

The boys faced CB Zaragoza in the final and were just ten points behind at half-time behind their more experienced opponents.

After a challenging second half the Spanish Boys came out on top, with the final score 95-74. The other teams in the event were Luxembourg and Northern Ireland.

At the end of the tournament Alexander Geddes
(St Andrew’s Secondary School) and Alex Hall (St Mungo’s Falkirk) were included in the All Star 5.

The Scotland girls beat Dublin Under-14s 56- 49 in the final day to cement third place. Luxembourg defeated Hessen in the final. Leah Stewart (James Young High School) gained a place in the All Star 5.

The tournament is recognised by basketballscotland as the official National Development Squad competition for Under-14 players, and the only Under-14 International basketball tournament recognised by FIBA this year in UK.

Both Scottish teams can take a great deal of credit for their efforts and Scotland Under-14 Boys head coach, John Kerray, said: “Everything that was worked and trained on came together as the team played fast and exciting basketball, and they gave the Spanish team a tough final.

“I could not be prouder of the boys, the coaching team and Scottish basketball.”
