Basketball: Young Scots face tough challenge

Scotland’s students face a stern challenge when they line up against holders England, Northern Ireland and Wales 
in the British Universities 
4 Nations Basketball Championship at the Edinburgh 
University Sports Centre at 
the Pleasance beginning 
tomorrow and going on until Thursday.

Scotland’s women include five Edinburgh University freshers, notably Claire Paxton and her Polonia clubmates Beth Mackie and Hilary Wood, plus Ailie Gardner (Falkirk Fury) and Hannah Peacock (Edinburgh Kool Kats) and Kats’ two Irish caps Shauna O’Connor and Louise Gray plus Jenny 
Simpson (all Queen Margaret University).

Scotland men, four of whom are from Edinburgh and seven of whom played in last year’s tournament in Nottingham, open against Wales tomorrow at 10am followed by the women at 12 noon.

Both Scotland teams then 
play Northern Ireland on Wednesday and finish up with what they hope will prove to be the 
deciders against England on Thursday, the men at 1pm and the women at 3pm.

Tomorrow: 10am: Scotland v Wales (m); 12 noon: Scotland v Wales (w); 2pm: England v Northern Ireland (m); 4pm: England v Northern Ireland (w).

Wednesday: 10am: Wales v England (w); 12 noon: Northern Ireland v Scotland (m); 2pm: Northern Ireland v Scotland (w); 4pm: Wales v England (m)

Thursday: 9am: Northern Ireland v Wales (w); 11am: Northern Ireland v Wales (m); 1pm: Scotland v England (m); 3pm: Scotland v England (w).
