Basketball: Tougher test lies ahead for Kings after crushing win

Led by their captain Paddy Campbell with 25 points, Edinburgh Kings cruised into the last four of basketball's Scottish Cup with a 97-21 win over luckless West Lothian Wolves at Portobello High School last night.

But Kings can expect very different opposition in the semi-finals where they will face this season's giant-killers Glasgow University, who, as expected, won their quarter-final local derby with Glasgow Storm 76-59 earlier in the week.

"I'm really looking forward to it - I much prefer tight games such as Glasgow gave us in the league recently to blow-outs," said Campbell, who came onto shooting form last night after a slow start.

Also in the points were Simon Flockhart with 22, Mike Kirkpatrick with 17, including five three-pointers. The semi-final will be in Glasgow a week on Saturday but before then Kings have a Scottish League game away to Dunfermline Reign at Queen Anne High School tomorrow, which in normal circumstances would be no trouble at all. But due to the non-availability of several players, the champions may be down to six players on their bench, which leaves very little margin for error should they get into foul trouble.

East Lothian Peregrines travel to Glasgow University tomorrow for a game which could produce a record number of three-pointers given the sharp-shooters on both sides.

Edinburgh Kool Kats face Falkirk Fury at Portobello on Sunday in a rearranged Scottish Women's League game with the Kats juniors and cadettes also facing the Furies.

Falkirk junior women are also at Currie High tomorrow to play Polonia Phoenix, whose seniors are away to St Mirren on Sunday.
