Basketball: Title race is blown wide open as Fury edge thriller over Kings with overtime victory

Falkirk FURY opened up the Scottish Basketball League title race with a thrilling 102-93 overtime home win over the unbeaten champions and league leaders Edinburgh Kings at the Mariner Sports Centre.

Falkirk's American guard David Foster scored an outstanding 38 points as Fury came from 12 points down with five minutes left to tie the game at 85-85 at the end of normal time.

Beaten by 18 points by Kings when the teams met at Portobello last October, Fury dominated the extra five minutes against a depleted Kings side, with only seven players on the bench.

But Falkirk could not stretch their lead beyond nine, leaving the Capital side with an advantage of ten points in the head-to-heads if the two sides end up with the same win-loss record. Kings, however, have still only been beaten once, while Fury are on two defeats, the same as St Mirren who have still to play Kings twice at the end of the season in March.

There can be no certainty Kings will win those games unless they beef up their bench, but coach Danny Costello was still smarting that his team had not won in normal time, a feat they so nearly achieved.

He said: "I'm just angry that after the game plan had succeeded we gave it all away through indiscipline," referring to two bad playing decisions as the clock was running down and the technical fouls picked up by Latvian Ed Rekis.

Meanwhile, East Lothian Peregrines went down 76-72 to Troon at Ayr's Citadel Centre, while Edinburgh Kool Kats beat St Mirren 63-40.
