Basketball: Scots excel but just miss out on netting top-eight slot

Three victories in Europe on the same day, including a great back-to-back win in Euro B, gave Scottish basketball a second successive day of glory.

A superb personal tally of 29 points and 11 rebounds from Ali Fraser, who also had four assists, a steal and two blocks, led Capital coach Doug Reilly's Scottish junior men to a 71-58 win over Portugal in their Euro B group in Tel Aviv.

But they later had a place in the top eight cruelly snatched away by just one basket when Bosnia beat Hungary 61-59 to take the crucial group runners-up spot on points difference.

Scotland will now play off for positions nine-16, scant reward for their wins over two bigger European countries. Falkirk Fury's Fraser and Lee Reilly (Edinburgh Kings), both played the entire 40 minutes.

In Andorra, Scotland beat Monaco in both under-16 Euro C tournaments, the men winning 81-33 and the women 66-37.
