Basketball: Scots earn plaudits for workrate

Scots basketball stars Rose Anderson (Edinburgh) and Kieron Achara (Stirling) can reasonably expect some more court time in tonight's vital EuroBasket qualifiers after hard-working contributions in last Saturday's games at the National Indoor Arena.

Achara played a key role in defence for Great Britain coach Chris Finch who has warned his players not to take anything for granted even though they sit top of Group B with a 4-0 record in EuroBasket 2011 qualifiers.

The Standard Life Team GB have now played and beaten everybody else in their group, but Finch is convinced there could yet be a sting in the tail as the campaign continues tonight with another home game at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham, this time against Hungary.

"If you'd have told me we'd be 4-0 of course I'd have taken it," Finch said. "But as I've told the guys, and we need to keep reminding them, you can't predict these groups.

"There's always twists and turns, and the closer you get to the end the harder it gets, the more meaningful the games are."

Britain still face trips to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and to Ukraine — the harder of the road games — and that weighs heavily on Finch's mind: "I'm sure there's a way that 6-2 doesn't see us qualify, and that's pretty daunting when you think about it," he said.

FYROM have a 3-1 record, while everyone else in the group — Hungary, Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina — are at 1-3, but Finch is not ready to call it a two-horse race yet.

"At the moment it's just us versus us," he said.

GB women will be without the 6ft 7in Sarah McKay for their away game to Germany tonight in Wolfenbuttel due to injury.
