Basketball: Rocks coach confident ahead of play-offs

GLASGOW Rocks coach Sterling Davis is plotting a tilt at the BBL play-off crown after his injury-hit side closed out the regular season with a 91-78 loss to new league champions Newcastle last night.

The Eagles – who clinched their third title in a row after rivals Sheffield lost at Worthing on Saturday – showed their class at the Kelvin Hall.

However Davis, whose line-up meets Leicester in the first round of the play-offs next weekend, is backing the Rocks to challenge for the post-season prize.

He said: "We were short of a few injured guys tonight but I wanted us to avoid using that as an excuse. We fought hard and that's the kind of mentality we're going to need over the next few weeks."

Worthing beat Plymouth 108-99 in an overtime thriller to snatch the final play-off berth.

Elsewhere in the BBL last night, Cheshire Jets beat Essex Pirates 99-62 and Worcester Wolves edged out Guildford Heat 98-96.
