Basketball: Hoop hoop hooray for Portobello as basketball stars are on a High

Portobello High School-based players were prominent in both Austria and Israel in a superb weekend for British basketball.

Scotland, steered by Edinburgh Kings junior coach Doug Reilly, achieved one of their best-ever international results when they upset Hungary 46-38 to record their first win in the Euro B Under-18 men's Championship in Tel Aviv.

In an incredibly tense finish in which the final quarter score was tied just 2-2, Scotland were led by 16 points from Falkirk's Ali Fraser and ten from Reilly's younger son Lee, who added five rebounds and a superb six assists. Meanwhile in Kavadarci in Macedonia, Great Britain under-20 women, having already clinched promotion to Euro A by reaching the final with a superb 59-40 win over Portugal, went on to capture the Euro B title for the very first time, beating favourites the Slovak Republic 47-46 after being 25-14 up at half-time. "That's an amazing result," said GB senior women's team manager Lucy Power, whose team including Porty High FP Rose Anderson were beaten twice by the Dutch in the Netherlands at the weekend.
