Basketball: England secure title with win over Scots at Riccarton

SCOTLAND'S men lost to England in the deciding game of the British Universities Home Nations Basketball Championships at Riccarton.

In a clash that was far from free-flowing – Scotland's British handball squad member Scott Frew was disqualified and Stirling's Kevin Scott suffered a broken nose – the powerful English led 41-33 at half-time before going on to win 78-49 and retain their title.

Ian Maclean's Scots began with Edinburgh Kings guard Garreth Lodge at point and Edinburgh's junior international Ian Black also in the starting five, while Stirling's Chris Cleary played despite a shoulder injury which had caused him to miss the win over Wales the previous day. And it was Cleary who emerged top scorer with 15, his St Mirren clubmate Neil Fraser adding 12.

Scotland's women, coached by Kool Kats mentor Graham Gunn, were already assured of the silver medals and gave England a strong early challenge, but were gradually worn down by a bigger, stronger side who retained their title 96-61 after leading 44-31 at half-time.

Sarah O'Brien (Edinburgh) had an excellent game to top-score with 17, while Gillian Baird (Stirling) had 14 and Lisa Haldane (Glasgow Caledonian) 11.

Kool Kats point guard Emma Findlay put in a 33-minute shift and soaked up the England pressure well while clubmate Nicola McBrierty (Edinburgh) scored four points and took four rebounds in a 29-minute stint.
