Basketball: Cracker in store as Kings host Fury in Scottish Cup

Edinburgh KINGS look like offering up a real Christmas cracker at Portobello High School on Friday, December 16.

That is the night the holders have set aside to play Falkirk Fury in the Scottish Cup semi-final, which is being played at a much earlier time in the season than previously.

Both teams cruised through their quarter-finals at the weekend against non-national league opposition, Kings snuffing out Aberdeen Beacon 107-39 at Portobello, where Lee Reilly led the way with 21 points and 10 assists, and Fury travelling to Perth to extinguish Phoenix 92-53.

But, and equally exciting for the Capital, Boroughmuir Blaze won through to the semis for the first time for many years, squashing Paisley’s PSG Gators 91-45 at St Thomas’s to be rewarded with a tough away tie to St Mirren, arguably the team of the moment after their recent upset league win over Kings.

That game will probably also take place on Friday, December 16, at the Lagoon Centre, Paisley.

Meanwhile, Blaze juniors slipped up away to Fury in their cup quarter-final, but the cadets did well to travel to Inverness and beat Highland Bears 78-66 yesterday to reach their last four.

Kings cadets also came though their clash with local rivals East Lothian Peregrines at North Berwick yesterday, the Peres by no means disgraced by a 78-37 scoreline.

Polonia Phoenix had a fine women’s treble, the seniors edging St Mirren 65-59 away, the juniors taking Tayside 77-55 at home and the cadettes beating the Muskies 61-34 at Arbroath.
