Basketball: Chopper is all geared up for Leeds clash

Edinburgh University men’s basketball coach Chopper Pettett will have a full-strength team available for the first time this season when the Capital students face the powerful Leeds Carnegie side at the Pleasance later today (5.30pm).

Two members of last season’s Scottish Universities team Michael Kirkpatrick and Liam McCabe are back and should boost the shooting and rebounding departments respectively of the home side, who must still be underdogs.

An upset win, however, would ease Edinburgh’s relegation worries before their vital home game against Glasgow a week today.

Elsewhere, former Edinburgh Kool Kat Rose Anderson came back to form after her recent ankle injury to top-score with 22 points for UWIC in the English Women’s first division at Sheffield but could not prevent the Cardiff side going down 90-84 to Sheffield Hatters.

Fellow Scot Marie Buchan, who, like Anderson, is a candidate for the Great Britain’s women’s side for the London Olympics, scored a US college career high 20 points for Old Dominion in their 91-89 away win over Hofstra in Hempstead, NY State.
