Basketball: Champs Kings give Glasgow a hammering

Edinburgh Kings gave Glasgow University a hammering on their own court at the Stevenson Building, hitting 14 three-pointers in a 112-50 Scottish League basketball romp.

Edinburgh vet student Mike Kirkpatrick led the way for Kings netting 26 points, including six three-pointers, with Simon Flockhart adding 25, including a rare vintage three, and Edgars Rekis 22.

Kings, who led 57-23 at half-time, and 85-35 after the third quarter, achieved a remarkable 50 per cent accuracy from beyond the three-point arc and 60 per cent from two-point range against a side touted as top-four material at the start of the season, but on this form more like basement battlers.

Paddy Campbell added 11 points, Lee Reilly nine, Martins Bremze seven and Craig Reilly and Garreth Lodge six each for the champions. Kings' next opponents are the table-propping Dunfermline at Portobello on Saturday and the Fifers, who have only just returned to the league cannot expect much return for their trip after losing by 30 points to St Mirren in Paisley.

Glasgow Rocks and Stirling Knights, the other two rookie teams in the league this season, fought out a much tighter battle, Knights edging it 89-88 at Cumbernauld on Saturday while second-top Falkirk Fury had little trouble taking care of East Lothian Peregrines 86-59 at the Mariner where Peregrines were again without Swedish centre Rob Jansson and Pete Lyons, the latter serving the final game of a four-match suspension imposed after an incident at Peregrines' home match with Kings at Musselburgh last month.

Polonia Phoenix had coach Stewart Harris back in charge for their senior women's home match with Grampian Flyers which they won easily 89-37 at Currie High yesterday.
