Basketball: Cadre of Kool Kats in Scots contingent amongst GB squad

Three Edinburgh Kool Kats players have been named among five Scots included in the training squad of 22 for the Great Britain Women's Under-20 basketball team to contest the European A Division Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia in July.

Edinburgh University student Sarah O'Brien, who helped Edinburgh Kool Kats win the Scottish Cup at the Pleasance last month and is in the Scottish Universities team to play the Scottish Juniors at Portobello High School tomorrow (11am), is joined by Portobello's Becca Allison, who is now at Old Dominion University, Virginia and Kathryn Taylor, who is at Coldgate University.

Along with Falkirk's Marie Buchan, who is now over the age limit, Allison was a prominent member of last year's Under-20 team who excelled in winning Division B and promotion to the top league for the first time. Taylor just missed selection for the final 12 last year and must have a good chance of being included this time around.

The other two Scots in the squad are ex-St Mirren player Deanne Hayward, now in her second year at Leeds Carnegie, and ex-Glasgow Rocks guard Erin McGarrachan, who recently transferred to Houston Baptist University in Texas where she will come under the wing of her former Scottish junior coach Donna Finnie.

Finnie is now assistant basketball coach at Houston Baptist University.

Lee Reilly (Edinburgh Kings) and former Kings junior Ali MacKay are both in the frame for the GB Under-20 men's squad which has still to be announced.
