Barry Ferguson admits Ibrox return was 'maybe a bit stupid'

BARRY Ferguson has admitted that he may have made a mistake returning to Rangers from Blackburn Rovers back in 2005.

Ferguson left Ibrox for Ewood Park in 2003 but returned north after only two years. Now, the midfielder – who is back at Blackburn for the first time tomorrow night with his current club Birmingham City – has revealed rejoining Rangers is perhaps something he will one day look back on with regret.

"Rangers came back in for me and my heart led me back up the road whereas, if I look back, maybe I should have stayed down in England," said Ferguson ahead of tomorrow's Barclays Premier League clash.

"People ask me that question quite a lot – 'Do you think you should have stayed down here?' – but what happens in life, happens. I don't regret any single thing I've done in football terms.

"But, maybe when I finish playing, I'll look back and say, 'Maybe I was a bit stupid to go back up to Scotland'. I went back up the road to Ibrox and I won more trophies so you can look at it in a lot of different ways."

Ferguson also insisted last night that he was not a flop during his spell at Blackburn.

The former Scotland captain was handicapped by a knee injury but is adamant he made a telling contribution when fit and skippered the side under Graeme Souness and Mark Hughes.

"I was captain at Blackburn," he explained. "I don't know why people have the perception that it didn't go well for me there. Maybe it was because I was injured.

"I enjoyed my time at Blackburn and I thought I played well. I think if you asked Blackburn fans then they would agree."
