Barça bounce back with Messi at the double

LIONEL Messi scored twice to help Barcelona shake off the disappointment of their midweek Champions League semi-final exit with a 4-1 victory at Villarreal in La Liga.

Any thoughts that tired limbs or damaged morale might affect the defence of their league title were misplaced as Messi, Xavi and Bojan Krkic netted in the first half at the Madrigal. Messi then bagged his second goal near the end to take his league tally for the season to 29 after Joseba Llorente had pulled one back for the hosts.

Bara have 90 points with three matches left, four ahead of Real Madrid who play Osasuna at the Bernabeu today.

AS Roma clambered back to the top of Serie A, at least for a day, after Francesco Totti added to his collection of classic goals with a marvellous lob in a 2-1 win at Parma. Internazionale can re-establish their two-point lead with victory at Lazio tonight.

Daniele De Rossi pinged a pass forward and captain Totti timed his run to perfection, chested the ball down and lobbed goalkeeper Antonio Mirante from 18 metres.

The striker later sent in a delightful cross which Rodrigo Taddei nodded in for the second goal on 75 minutes. Davide Lanzafame's superb header set up a nervous finish during which Parma's Luis Jimenez was sent off.

Bayern Munich effectively won the Bundesliga when a Thomas Mueller hat-trick gave them a 3-1 win over VfL Bochum while rivals Schalke 04 lost 2-0 at home to Werder Bremen. The win took treble-chasing Bayern three points clear of Schalke with a game left and a 17-goal difference over their rivals, making it all but impossible for them to be caught. Louis van Gaal's team have also reached the German Cup final, where they face Werder Bremen, and the Champions League final, against Inter.

An extra time header from striker Guillaume Hoarau helped Paris St Germain beat Monaco 1-0 in the French Cup final.
