Badminton: Mason builds more success

EDINBURGH'S Emma Mason reclaimed the women's doubles badminton title at the Yonex Scottish Championships at Bell's Sports Centre in Perth, while Longniddry youngster Paul van Rietvelde had to settle for two runner-up spots.

Van Rietvelde lost in the final of the mixed doubles with Edinburgh's Jillie Cooper and was back on court less than an hour later with Renfrew's Watson Briggs in the men's doubles. They were the No.1 seeds but lost 21-12, 8-21, 18-21 to the Lanarkshire pair of Jamie Neill and Keith Turnbull.

Imogen Bankier, who has reached the top ten in the world in the mixed, made a successful comeback from a long-term knee injury to take both the women's doubles with Mason and the mixed for a fourth time in a row with Briggs.

Susan Egelstaff claimed the women's singles title for a fifth time, defeating fellow-Glaswegian Linda Sloan 21-13, 21-16 in the final.

In the men's singles, meanwhile, Calum Menzies scored a huge upset when he defeated Kieran Merrilees 21-16, 21-16 to win the title. Menzies was the No.2 seed but, unusually, he combines his training commitments with a full-time job as a mechanical fitter at the Grangemouth oil refinery.
