Badminton: MacPherson stops Glasgow full house

The Royal High School’s Julie MacPherson broke a Glasgow School of Sport monopoly in the under-13 and under-17 singles at the Scottish National junior Championships at Meadowbank.

Julie is a former under-13 and under-15 champion and she added the under-17 title with a final victory over Glasgow School of Sport’s Holly Newall.

Lily Farnood is also at the Royal High – and she took the first game before losing a tough three setter to Sarah Sidebottom. She was also runner-up in the girls’ doubles.

Christopher Grimley and Sarah Sidebottom won the under-13 singles titles, while Adam Hall, a former pupil of the Glasgow School of Sport, retained the under-17 boys’ title.

Adam made history by becoming the first player to win all three under-17 titles – singles, doubles and mixed – two years in succession.

“I should be in my sixth year but I decided to take a year out and train full-time,” said Adam. “I’ve got three Highers but not sure yet which career I want to follow. At the moment I’m enjoying my badminton.”
