Badminton: Edinburgh duo Emma Mason and Jillie Cooper through in Austria

EDINBURGH'S Emma Mason and Jillie Cooper marched through to the semi-finals of the Austrian International Badminton Challenge in Vienna.

The capital stars scored a terrific 21-15, 21-10 win against the No.4 seeds from Russia, Tatjana Bibik and Olga Golanova, and then knocked out Indonesia's Natalia Poctiowiak and Agnieszka Wojtkowska 21-14, 25-23.

They now meet the Japanese pair of Naoko Futuna and Minatsa Mitani for a place in the final.

In the mixed doubles, Mason and Renfrew's Watson Briggs went out at the quarter-final stage. They lost 17-21, 11-21 to Croatia's Zvonimir Duikinjak and Stasa Poznanovic.

Edinburgh's Martin Campbell and Troon's Angus Gilmour also went out at the final-eight mark in the men's doubles. They lost 19-21, 12-21 to the Welsh No.4 seeds, Joe Morgan and James Phillips.

In the singles, Scottish Champion Susan Egelstaff, the No.2 seed, survived a close 21-19, 11-21, 21-17 tussle against France's Perrine Lebuhanic to make the semi-finals.

In the men's singles, Glasgow's Kieran Merrilees made it to the quarter-finals with an easy 21-13, 21-12 victory over Germany's Yuhan Tan but then went out 19-21, 13-21 to the Indonesian No.3 seed, Andre Tedjono.
