Badminton: Cooper into last eight

Edinburgh’s Jillie Cooper and Renfrew’s Watson Briggs beat two French couples to reach the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles at the Scottish International Championships at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow.

Cooper and Briggs opened the campaign with a 3-21 25-23 win over Sylvain Grosjean and Emilie Lefel.

The perfect follow-up was a 21-19, 21-15 victory over Baptiste Careme and Audrey Fontaine to make it into the last eight and a meeting with England’s Tom Wolfenden and Holly Smith.

In the women’s singles, Kirsty Gilmour, the 18-year-old from Bothwell, ousted former winner Elizabeth Cann – but then went out in the last 16 stage to Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt.
