Badminton: Children play part in centenary year

More than 80 schoolchildren had the opportunity to share in an event to mark the centenary of Badminton Scotland last week.

Children from Abbey Primary School (North Ayrshire), Cumbernauld Primary School (North Lanarkshire), Eaglesham Primary School (East Renfrewshire), Kelvindale Primary School (Glasgow) and Lenzie Primary School (East Dunbartonshire) participated in a Through the Ages carnival and received coaching from Cardonald College students last week.

Badminton Scotland is fortunate to have an excellent partnership with the college that enables them to provide students with opportunities to coach and organise events.

The carnival allowed children to play badminton using traditional wooden racquets serving into chalk hoops drawn on the floor. Modern technology included a speed gun and prototype Yonex racquets. A display of memorabilia allowed youngsters to try on the Commonwealth Games gold medal won by Dan Travers in Edinburgh in 1986, with the hope that the next home Games will bring another Scottish win.
