Badminton: Bankier and Adcock give opponents no quarter at Wembley

Scotland's Imogen Bankier and England's Chris Adcock were the only British pair to make the quarter-finals of the Yonex World badminton championships after a terrific mixed doubles win at Wembley yesterday.

The couple beat the No.8 seeds from Thailand in the second round and they swept into the last eight with a battling win against the Japanese No.15 seeds, Shintaro Ikeda and Reiko Shiota.

The Bank of Scotland Scottish International Champions lost the opening game 17-21 but bounced back to win the next two 21-15 21-16 and they now have another chance to beat the odds with a tie against the No.4 seeds from China, Jiaming Tao and Tian Qing. "It's been an amazing week at Wembley and the crowd support has made a big difference said Bankier, a 23-year-old from Glasgow. "We played really well .

"There is now no reason that we can't go on and pull out another big win in the quarter-finals."

Bankier and Adcock rose two places in this week's world rankings to No.18 - and are now just ten spots behind the leading British pair of Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork.

Robertson, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist with Gail Emms, and Wallwork were knocked out in the second round of the World Championship earlier in the week.
