Tom Varndell, the Aviva Premiership’s leading tryscorer, struck for his eighth of the season after only three minutes, with stand-off Nick Robinson adding a first half penalty for Wasps. Their attacking approach helped maintain their unbeaten home record in all competitions this season.

Stand-off George Ford replied with four penalties for the Tigers, who stay fifth in the table having gone into the match needing an 11-point win to depose leaders Harlequins.

Meanwhile, Exeter recorded their first away win of the Premiership season against London Irish at the Madejski Stadium. Exeter were leading 21-3 after just 18 minutes and the hosts looked in danger of being routed. However the Exiles rallied to lead 23-21 midway through the second half before Gareth Steenson’s two late penalties sealed the win.
