Athletics: Young athletes set new benchmark

Edinburgh AC have finished third in the McCain UK Young Athletes League final at Manchester's Sports City.

"That's our highest-ever place," said team manager Keith Ridley. "We were fourth on the previous two occasions."

Edinburgh tallied 714.5 points, victory going to Enfield with 779.5, from Windsor, Slough and Eton, 749.5.

Highlights included a win for Kimberley Reed in the under-17 hammer (47.96 metres), for which she was named Female Field Athlete of the Match, following her personal best of 50.41m for second at the UK School Games at Gateshead the previous day, and a win in the 800m for Olivia O'Hare in 2:16.45. Jay Younger won the u-17 400m in 49.36 to follow up his bronze medal in the UK School Games, while Tom Holligan, winner of the 200m at the UK School Games, won the B 400m in 50.94.
