Athletics: Twell shows her muscles in Brussels

Musselburgh's Yvonne Murray has lost her 15-year-old Scottish National 5000 metres record to a 21-year-old Anglo-Scot who will represent Scotland in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Aldershot-based Steph Twell, a regular visitor to Great Edinburgh cross country events in Holyrood, smashed Murray's long-standing mark in the Diamond League meeting in Brussels last night, clocking 14:54.08 to cut 2.86 seconds off the record.

Twell, whose mother hails from Paisley, then confirmed she will double up and run both 1500m and 5000m for Scotland in Delhi. She hacked 22 seconds off her own personal best in finishing 11th in a high-quality field dominated by African runners.

"I really enjoyed that - the pace was exactly what I needed," said Twell, who had set a personal best for 1500 metres only the week before. "This was all about keeping in touch with the event as I've been concentrating on the 1500m this season."

The winner was Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya in 14:34.13.
