Athletics: Time target for Holligan

Fresh from his Commonwealth Youth Games Scottish qualifying time of 21.70 seconds for 200 metres at Grangemouth this week, Tom Holligan (Edinburgh AC) will compete as a guest in the 100m in the British League Division Three meeting at Scotstoun tomorrow chasing a qualifying time of 10.70sec.

Holligan became the seventh Scot to achieve a qualifying standard for the 2011 Games, due to be held in the Isle of Man in September.

One of the other six to have made the standard is his clubmate Kimberley Reed, who has thrown the hammer 53.63m.

With only six places allocated to Scottish athletes for the Isle of Man a qualifying standard in two events would certainly strengthen Holligan's case for selection.

He will be hoping that the wind is not as strong tomorrow as it was in Glasgow last Sunday when he ran 10.55 secs, helped by a gust of 7.7 metres per second.

At Wednesday's Grangemouth meeting the following wind was a near-perfect 1.0mps, compared with the legal maximum of 2.0mps.

Elsewhere, Edinburgh AC will open their UK Women's League first division campaign at Leigh Sports Village, near Manchester tomorrow and are hoping to improve on last year's overall fifth position.

With Susan McKelvie (hammer), Emma Nuttall (high jump), Stacey Downie (sprints) and Kathryn Evans (400m) all available, hopes are high for a strong start to the campaign.
