Athletics: Strange but true, he's qualified

Fort William pole vaulter Ali Strange clinched his place in the Scottish Commonwealth Games team for Delhi with a dramatic 11th hour qualification in the British League at Eton yesterday.

With only a day left before the deadline, the 27-year-old Loughborough engineering student cleared the target 5.2m height for the second time this season to match the selection criteria. He went on to have one unsuccessful try at a new Scottish record of 5.3m but his task was accomplished and he joins current record-holder Richard Hurren (Falkirk) in the team.
