Athletics: Smith eyes five in a row

DUNFERMLINE-based Nick Smith bids for his fifth Scottish 100 metres title in a row at Scotstoun tomorrow and seventh in all.

Now 28, the Stewart's Melville FP could easily take his tally into double figures by Glasgow 2014 and his recent 200m form suggests he might be on for a double this weekend, though Pitreavie's Ryan Oswald could run him close, especially in the 200m.

Not facing Smith tomorrow will be Firrhill High schoolboy Tom Holligan (EAC), who this week was named as the only Home Scots athlete in the British team for the European Youth Olympics in Trabzon, Turkey, from July 23 to 30. The Scottish senior indoor 200 metres champion, Holligan, 17, will concentrate on Sunday on helping his club win the Scottish Under-18 4 x 100m relay.
