Athletics: Scots seeking coach after Primeau exit

Scottish Athletics has begun a search for a new head coach after Laurier Primeau confirmed he is quitting the post after less than 18 months in charge.

The Canadian, who had a contract up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, is understood to have decided to return home for family reasons.

The move caught officials by surprise after Primeau had led a recent review of the sport's performance system following a poor overall showing in Delhi in October where Scotland collected just two medals.

Scottish Athletics chief executive Nigel Holl said: "2014 is fast approaching and we have athletes competing every week between now and then so we won't hang around.

"Laurier has set things up nicely. His plan is there and we've been refining it in the light of Delhi. But there is a good base and he's built a good team which isn't going away."

Primeau led moves to establish a high-performance training centre at Glasgow's Scotstoun Stadium and implemented an overhaul of the domestic calendar which will see Scotland compete more regularly as a team.

Holl added: "We've a new chairman, a new chief executive, a new strategic plan so we will re-evaluate. We need a head coach but the skills might change."
