Athletics: Robbins returns to action in the 200 metres

NEW YEAR SPRINT winner Ben Robbins will have his first outing since collecting the £4000 first prize at Musselburgh when he runs in the 200 metres at the Scottish Open Championships at the new Emirates Indoor Arena in ­Glasgow tomorrow.

The 16-year-old George Watson’s schoolboy, whose target for the year is the World Youth Championships in Turkey in July, is looking to beat his personal best of 22.21 secs.

Fastest man in the field is Ryan Oswald (Pitreavie), who has a best of 21.23 secs, 
while another former New Year winner, Chirnside’s Pat Swan, is entered.

Also running in what will be 41 mixed races, graded according to best times, will be New Year Sprint third place finisher Gemma Nicol (Dunfermline).

Lasswade star Guy Learmonth, whose best is 1:47.10, is the fastest in the field for the first of 26 heats of the 800 metres, which also includes clubmate Ross Matheson (best 1:51.40) and Graeme Oudney (best 1:47.80).

Allan Smith (Edinburgh AC), who soared to joint second on the Scottish All-Time high jump list with his Scottish Native Record of 2.22 metres at the same venue last Saturday, must be torn between striving to go even higher or saving himself for some bigger competitions.
