Athletics: O'Hare takes second spot

Chris O'HARE (Edinburgh AC) achieved one of the best results in the history of Scottish middle distance running when he finished a close second in the one-mile final at the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas, on Saturday.

The 20-year-old Tulsa University student, who broke four minutes for the first time last January, was timed at 3:59.62, just .13 sec behind winner Miles Batty (Brigham Young), whom he had pipped to win his heat the previous day in 4:00.87.

The former Peebles High pupil, whose best time is 3:56.48, tried to push the pace for most of the race, even though all the other competitors had previously broken four minutes.

"We're so pleased with Chris even though we know he'll be disappointed at losing on the line," said his father Terry.

"Let's hope we've got a Scot for the future in middle distance running that we can all be proud of."
