Athletics: O'Hare makes breakthrough

The 20-year-old Edinburgh AC runner Chris O'Hare, now a student at Tulsa University in Arizona, has made a remarkable breakthrough, winning an indoor mile in 3:56.48 at a meeting in Fayeteville at the weekend.

O'Hare becomes only the third Scot to break four minutes indoors and goes to second on the All-Time list behind David Strang, who ran 3:55.43 in 1994. The third Scot under four minutes is Borderer Colin Hume, who represented Edinburgh Southern Harriers and ran 3:59.8 indoors in 1983.

The following day, O'Hare's clubmate Kris Gauson, the former Scottish 1500 metres champion, recorded 4:01.38 in Seattle, just marginally outside his best of 4:00.31 set last month.
