Athletics: Nuttall leads Edinburgh club to medal haul in Glasgow

Emma NUTTALL led Edinburgh AC to a clean sweep of the medals in the women's high jump at the Scottish Indoor Championships at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow.

The 18-year-old Nuttall upstaged her better known clubmate Jayne Nisbet to smash her personal best by 3cms and clear 1.83 metres, equalling Jayne Barnetson's Scottish Native record set in 1989.

Nisbet bagged a season's best of 1.80m, with Caitlin O'Neill third (1.65m).

Clearing every height first time, Nuttall went on to have a close attempt at a new best of 1.86m. "I'm disappointed - I really wanted 1.86m," said the Strathclyde University first year history student.

"I'd already got the European Junior qualifying height - but I'll keep pushing upwards," added Nuttall, whose coach Laurier Primeau is leaving his National post with Scottish Athletics soon, leaving her with a potential problem. "We'll work something out," said Nuttall.

Nisbet was generous in defeat: "Emma was awesome - I'm so happy to have someone else around to push me."

Worse was to come for Nisbet as her boyfriend Richard Hurren, Scottish pole vault record-holder, snapped his Achilles tendon in the warm-up and was stretchered off to hospital. He was operated on yesterday and will be in a cast for six weeks.

Nisbet, however, went on to win the triple jump with a first round leap of 12.06m. Edinburgh University's American student Ray Bobrownicki took the men's high jump with a 2.20m effort and fourth year Heriot-Watt student Jamie Bowie the 400 metres in 47.65 secs, with New year Sprint winner Martyn Paterson (Central) third in 50.12.

Shock of the day was provided by 16-year-old Firrhill High pupil Tom Holligan (EAC), who charged to the 200 metres title in a personal best indoors of 21.98 secs.
