Athletics: Myra makes her mark

Mary ERSKINE'S FP Myra Perkins smashed her own Scottish Under-20 hammer record by nearly three metres in capturing the British Universities title with a throw of 61.94 metres at Bedford, writes.

The 19-year-old Falkirk Victoria club member obliterated her previous record of 58.05m from last May, though she also had an unratified mark of 58.14m set a week ago. Perkins also goes top of the Scottish senior rankings for the season, overtaking Edinburgh's national champion Susan McKelvie (60.96m), and is now third on the UK senior list. Scottish students dominated the men's high jump with another 19-year-old, David Smith (Strathclyde) clearing a personal best of 2.19 metres to turn the tables on the BUCS and Scottish indoor champion Ray Bobrownicki (Edinburgh), who was second with 2.16m, his best outdoor performance of 2011.

Smith's Strathclyde University team-mate Emma Nuttall (Edinburgh AC) will attempt to make it a Scottish double when she competes in the women's final later today. Scottish indoor champion Nuttall needed only one jump yesterday at 1.63m to qualify for the final.
