Athletics: Murray mulls over move up to 10,000m for Delhi

CAPITAL distance star Freya Murray is considering moving up to the 10,000 metres for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October following her great victory over England's Jo Pavey in the Great Ireland Run.

Murray (Edinburgh AC) clocked 32 minutes 30 seconds to defeat Pavey by 15 seconds, one of the fastest times ever recorded for the distance by a Scot, with the former World Cross Country champion Benita Willis of Australia well back in third place in 34:28.

Murray's win over Willis, who finished 20 places ahead of her and 49 seconds faster in last month's World Championships in Poland, was probably the bigger achievement as Pavey is only just getting back to competition after the birth of her first child last September.

"I'm really pleased – I felt great and really enjoyed it and the course wasn't particularly flat – in fact it was quite undulating with two fairly big uphill sections in the second half of the race," commented Murray who has already one qualifying time for Delhi in the 5000m – she needs at least one more to be sure of being picked.

Murray will delay a final decision on the 10,000m – her time on the roads in Dublin is faster than she has ever run on the track – until she has been back out to Boulder, Colorado to see her coach Steve Jones, the former London Marathon wnner.

Meanwhile Murray's club Edinburgh AC were finishing first and third in the women's and men's Scottish Leagues yesterday.

Fielding a team with only one senior, three cadets (under-17s), and the rest juniors Edinburgh had some fine doubles, notably from Allan Hamilton, Corey Hastings, Tom Holligan and Peter Loudon.
