Athletics: Groin injury forces Asafa Powell's late withdrawal from Crystal Palace

JAMAICAN sprinter Asafa Powell, the fastest man in the world this year, withdrew from the Aviva London Grand Prix due to injury.

Powell was scheduled to compete in the 100 metres at Crystal Palace last night but opted not to take any chances ahead of the World Championships later this month.

"I've had some tightness in my groin since (competing in] Budapest," Powell said yesterday afternoon. "I had hoped that it would have cleared by now but it's still there. I've been seeking treatment but had to make the decision today to withdraw.

"I am focusing on Daegu and as much as I'd like to run tonight, I just can't take the risk with the major championships three weeks away.

"This is a tough decision as I always love to run in London, the fans here are incredible and I want to thank them for their support."

The news came as a major blow to organisers and the large number of Jamaican fans who always turn out at Crystal Palace - Powell admitted they make south London feel like "a mini Jamaica".

However, the 28-year-old had hinted during Thursday's preview press conference that he would not take any risks with his fitness. "It's important to test where you are and make sure everything is working fine," he had said, "but you still have to be cautious, make the right decisions, decide is it smart to run fast or take it easy."
