Athletics: Freya shows she has steel against Purdue in Sheffield

Scotland's Commonwealth Games distance running hope Freya Murray (Edinburgh AC) turned the tables on her close English rival Charlotte Purdue to record her second successive win the BUPA Great Yorkshire 10K Run in Sheffield, writes sandy sutherland.

Murray pulled away in the final 400 metres to win in 33 minutes one second, five seconds clear of Purdue, who had beaten her over 5000 metres in Cardiff the previous weekend, when both set personal bests.

"That's us one each and we're both doing the double in Delhi," said Murray. "We worked well together in the race and it wasn't till the last 200 metres that I really got away - I'm really pleased to win," she added.

Craig Mottram, the talented Australian with the Scottish mother who has been controversially omitted from the Australian team for Delhi, was an impressive winner of the men's race, beating European 10,000m silver medallist Chris Thompson by one second in 28:50. Another of Scotland's Delhi-bound team, Capital physio Al Hay, broke four minutes in the Middlesbrough International Road Mile on Teesside but was still only fifth in the race and finished out of the prizes. The winner was Anglo-Scot Bruce Raeside in 3:53.00 while Hay was timed at 3:59.00.
