Athletics: Distance running comes to fore in Capital

CORSTORPHINE AC member Tom Ferrington is trying to promote distance running at Meadowbank tomorrow, writes SANDY SUTHERLAND.

He is promoting an open 10,000 metres race which has attracted a healthy list of many of the leading club runners in the country. The race will take place at 12.30pm in the middle of the Lothian & Borders League meeting, also at the stadium, and entries cost 5 per head.

"I want to bring some enthusiasm into Scots distance running," says Ferrington.

Neil Renault (EAC) and Edinburgh University's Michael Gillespie look the main Capital hopes in a field which also includes Michael's brother Matthew, John Newsom (Pitreavie) Ross Houston, Mark Graham, Ben Hukins and the official national champion Bobby Quinn (Kilbarchan), now well into his 40s.
