Athletics: Clegg's final burst earns gold

EDINBURGH'S Libby Clegg ended five years of hurt at the IPC World Athletics Championships in New Zealand after claiming a dramatic 100m gold medal by the width of her vest.

The 20-year-old had already climbed the podium at Christchurch's Queen Elizabeth II Park two days before her preferred T12 100m event scooping bronze in the 200m.

Clegg didn't get off to the best of starts trailing both Slovakia's Hanka Kolinikova and Spain's Eva Ngui early on, however, she made up for it over the last 50m.

The sole Scot on the Aviva GB and NI team drew level with Kolinkova and Ngui as the finishing line drew closer with only a duck at the death the difference between first and third.

Clegg claimed gold in 12.73 seconds - 0.02 ahead of Kolinkova and further 0.21 in front of Ngui - making up for being cruelly denied 100m silver at the last championships in 2006.

"I won silver in Assen in 2006 but got disqualified so this means a lot," said Clegg - who claimed 100m silver at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008.

"Beijing was obviously my first Paralympic Games so I don't think I could ever forget that but this right up there."

Clegg's gold has far reaching consequences with the Scot now the early favourite to repeat the trick at the next big event - the London 2012 Paralympics.

The Edinburgh AC sprinter said: "This gives me a lot to build on for London and at this stage in my career I don't think I would want to be anywhere else. Now I just have to carry on training hard and making sure that I am well prepared."
