Athletics: City athletes are China-bound

Capital stars Kris Gauson (1500 metres) and Lynsey Sharp (800m) have both been named in the British athletics team for the World University Games in Shenzhen, China, next month.

They join Dundee's Eilish McColgan (3000m steeplechase) and Anglo-Scot David Bishop (1500m) in a 25-strong team for the massive multi-sports event to be held from August 12 to 23.

But Pitreavie sprinter Ryan Oswald, a research student at Heriot-Watt, has missed out on a place despite his brilliant win over favourite Nick Smith to capture the Scottish 200m title at Scotstoun, Glasgow, last Sunday.

The success of Gauson and Sharp comes at a price, however, for each athlete has to stump up a personal contribution of 700 for the privilege of representing GB.

Gauson, who has become a full-time athlete since completing his studies at Butler University in Indiana, has revealed that he would not have been able to accept the nomination were it not for a Scots pub in New York, near to the residence of his agent, who have donated the proceeds of their karaoke event.
