Athletics: Child selected for Britain

Perth PE teacher Eilidh Child (Pitreavie) is one of five Scots named in the British team for the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona from 27 July to 1 August.

The Scottish 400 metres hurdles record-holder joins Glasgow's Lee McConnell (400 metres, 4x400 relay), Steph Twell (Aldershot) (1500m) and marathon runners Martin Williams (Tipton) and Susan Partridge (Glasgow).

Birmingham-based Williams is the only Scots male athlete in the team. Andrew Lemoncello (Fife), who with a time of 2:13.40 is the fastest Briton over the marathon this year, declined selection.

McConnell, who just missed the UK qualifying standard of 51.50, has nevertheless been chosen for the individual 400m as the only British representative.

Mary Erskine's schoolgirl hammer-thrower Myra Perkins (Falkirk Victoria) is one of three Scots named in the British team for the World Junior Championships in Monckton, Canada (19-25 July).
