Athletics: Campbell injuries revealed

It turns out that Scottish javelin record-holder James Campbell had a double reason for being off form in Belgium last Saturday when he threw some nine metres below his best of more than 80m which he would have needed to repeat to clinch his place in the World Championships in Daegu.

The Cheltenham-based athlete actually tore his left hamstring during the competition in Ninove.

But on top of that he had already damaged his shoulder in an earlier competition and a scan has revealed two tissue tears which will require an operation.

In the end four Scots were actually chosen for Daegu, marathon runners Andrew Lemoncello (Fife) and East Kilbride's Susan Partridge being added to Glasgow's Lee McConnell (400m & 4x400m) and Pitreavie's Eilidh Child (400m hurdles & 4x400m). But Dundee's Eilish McColgan, who broke her own Scottish steeplechase record in the trials, was ruled out as she had actually broken a bone in her foot in the race.
