ARU's backing sees Rebels secure Lipman

NEW Super 15 franchise the Melbourne Rebels have finalised the signing of controversial former Bath flanker Michael Lipman for their maiden campaign next season.

The 30-year-old Lipman's move had originally been block by the Australian Rugby Union in February after he was handed a nine-month ban for failing to take a drug test before his exit from Bath last June.

The suspension lapsed at the end of February, however, and with the ARU's endorsement the Rebels were finally able to sign Lipman, who while raised in Australia played ten Tests for England.

"We've been in discussions with Michael for some time now and are delighted he's made the decision to come to Melbourne, having received the endorsement of the Australian Rugby Union," Rebels assistant coach Mark Bakewell said.

"There's no doubt he will add metal to our forward pack and make a significant contribution to the establishment of our club culture."

Lipman, who has been playing with Sydney club Warringah since his return to Australia, said: "I can't think of a better place to continue my rugby career than Melbourne with (head coach] Rod Macqueen and his coaching staff."
