Arctic Cosmos keeps cool at the finish to land St Leger

Arctic Cosmos, blinkered for the first time, sprang a 12-1 surprise at Doncaster to lift the St Leger, the final classic of the English season.

Ridden by William Buick for trainer John Gosden, Arctic Cosmos took up the running with 200 metres to go and held on by a length-and-three-quarters from Midas Touch (13-2) with the front-running Corsica (40-1) third of the ten runners.

Rewilding, the even-money favourite, proved a big disappointment for jockey Frankie Dettori and owners Godolphin. The colt struggled in the final 400 metres and finished sixth.

It was a first Leger success for Buick in his first season with Gosden. The jockey said: "I've won on a very good horse. We put the blinkers on him to sharpen him up, to make him concentrate and it's worked."

Gosden added: "We've always dreamt he was a Leger horse and he's done it like a proper horse. He's in the Breeders' Cup and we may dream about that."

There was more disappointment for the Godolphin team 30 minutes later in the Irish St Leger at The Curragh when their runner Kite Wood finished unplaced behind 13-8 favourite Sans Frontieres.
