Archery: Andrea Gale puts the world No 1's feather in her cap

Andrea Gales claimed a notable win over world archery No 1 Nicky Hunt on her way to finishing fourth in the women's compound tournament at the FITA World Cup Grand Final in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens yesterday.

Gales defeated her Great Britain teammate in a one-arrow shoot-off after their match finished 5-5, before losing out to world champion Albina Loginova of Russia in the semi-finals and American Erika Anschutz in the bronze medal match.

Loginova went on to win her first World Cup Grand Final title, beating Canada's Ashley Wallace in the final.

"For me, being here was a fantastic experience, and ultimately I paid the price for a couple of mistakes, but if you make them at this level you pay a heavy price," said Gales, from Woking, who lost 7-1 to Anschutz but picked up a cheque for 700 for her fourth place.

"It's been a fantastic weekend, and it all makes up for the disappointment of not qualifying for the Commonwealth Games."

Hunt, from Ipswich, was among five out of the six British archers involved who fell in the opening round.

"It was very disappointing, but these things happen. I made one bad mistake against Andrea and paid heavily for it."
