Arbroath put cup defeat behind them to beat Fifers and move closer to play-offs

ARBROATH claimed a double whammy last night as they surged to a well-deserved 32-run victory over Dunfermline.

Not only did they earn instant revenge for their Scottish Cup semifinal defeat by the Fifers, they almost certainly clinched a place in the top-four play-offs.

Skipper Fraser Burnett laid the foundations at Lochlands with a fine knock of 61, while pro Harsha Vithana hit 31 to guide the Angus team to 179.

Sri Lankan all-rounder Vithana then made sure of the win by taking three for 28, sending the Knights slithering to 147 all out.

At the other end of the table, Ayr bagged a precious seven-wicket success against Drumpellier.

New Zealand hero Michael Papps was the man who mattered most, clouting 84 not out in the seasiders' pursuit of 142.

He was well backed up by veteran Mark Renny, who struck an unbeaten 34.

Gregor Maiden was dismissed just seven runs short of three figures as Grange completed a 49-run win at the expense of Stoneywood-Dyce.

Warren McSkimming contributed 48 and Sanjay Patel 32 to carry the capital men to 250 for eight, despite accurate bowling by Gordon Goudie and Michael Leask, who shared seven scalps.

Jan Stander (86) did his best to inspire SD, but Andrew Brock and Neil McCallum each snatched three wickets to thwart them.

James Easton's century proved the platform for glory as Watsonians outgunned Heriot's in the capital derby. Easton, who scored exactly 100, was given stout support by Tim Weston (91) to propel Sonians to 254 for five.

Sean Weeraratna battled hard for the Goldenacre side, but he ran out of partners during their slide to 216 all out.

Stirling County plunged deeper into the basement zone as they crashed at the hands of Clydesdale.

County were in bother from the start and could only limp to 116 - a tally that never really tested Dale.

Grant Anderson was Stirling's most stubborn batsman with 42, while Josh Edwards took three for 19 to put a better complexion on the result.

Clydesdale's top performers in the five-wicket win were Mohammed Ali (three for 23) and Majid Haq (42 not out).

The helter-skelter nature of the Championship continued as pacesetters Poloc were hammered by West Lothian - the side they had replaced at the top of the table.Poloc were shot out for a mere 94 with Gregor Thomson and Clinton Dixon sharing an eight-wicket haul.

Only Hasan Akram was able to offer meaningful resistance at Boghall, scoring 35.

The hosts' batsmen then strolled to the meagre target in a leisurely 25 overs for the loss of only one wicket.

Dumfries got back on tracks with a nervy success in a low-scoring encounter with Kelburne.

They feared the worst when they were bundled out for only 117, but Scott Beveridge snapped up six cheap scalps.
