Angus Newz can hog the headlines again

Angus Newz ended a barren spell stretching back almost two years at Newmarket on Saturday and she can strike again today at Leicester, a course on which the mare has an impressive track record.

The seven-year-old, trained by former Newcastle United striker Mick Quinn, had a handicap rating as high as 100 in her pomp but a long winless spell had seen her drop down to just 78 ahead of her weekend assignment.

A couple of decent efforts behind the likes of Jim Goldie's Hawkeyethenoo and Elnawin earlier in the campaign suggested she still retained ability, so it should not have come as a huge surprise when she finally got her head in front at Headquarters.

As well as her drop in the weights, it could have been the slightly easier conditions that aided her return to form and it is interesting she is turned out again so quickly for this contest, the ladbrokes.com Prestwold Conditions Stakes.

She has a liking for Leicester with two wins and three thirds from five starts at the course, and with conditions again likely to be testing, another bold show is anticipated.

Midnight Caller looks a good thing in the EBF ladbrokes.com Filbert Maiden Fillies' Stakes. The Dansili filly was a narrow second on her debut at Doncaster and would possibly have won had she not hung right in the closing stages.

It would be a big surprise if she does not make amends at the second time of asking.

Luca Cumani and Kieren Fallon have proved a formidable combination in recent weeks and they look set to find the target again as Toymaker lines up in the 40 Live Football Markets At totesport.com Maiden Stakes at Folkestone.

The three-year-old was not particularly well fancied for his racecourse introduction at Doncaster a month ago and although he was ultimately well held, he caught the eye making late progress without being knocked around. He passed the post in fifth in what was probably a better race than this and normal improvement should see him play a part in the finish.

Normandy Maid let favourite backers down on her latest start at Newmarket but she can reward those who keep the faith in Ripon's Thank You Peter Bateson Nursery. An eyecatching debut third at Catterick was followed by victory at Thirsk and it was perhaps slightly disappointing that she could only manage third on her handicap debut. However, she still looked green and was not beaten all that far at the finish and she deserves another chance in what is a moderate affair.

The best bet on the all-weather at Southwell is the Ralph Beckett-trained Golden Creek, while Ballyvesey has suffered a couple of reverses of late but he is taken to regain the winning thread in the Newton Abbot Racecourse Novices' Chase at the Devon venue.
