Andy Webster concentrates on here and now

ANDY Webster is too focused on securing a successful conclusion to his Dundee United career to think about a more lasting reunion with his erstwhile Rangers colleagues.

The defender has been named alongside David Weir, Kris Boyd and Steven Davis on the Player of the Year award nominee list amid a successful season-long loan spell at Tannadice.

After making just one appearance for Rangers in an injury-hit two-and-a-half year spell, Webster has played 28 times for United and has assumed the role of captain. The centre-back's form saw him resume his Scotland career last month after a four-year hiatus, which also saw him make a pioneering move from Hearts to Wigan, where he was also dogged by injuries.

That frustrating spell means Webster does not look too far ahead, and there is plenty to focus on as United look to secure European football ahead of their Scottish Cup final against Ross County.

"I'm just worrying about between now and the end of the season," the 27-year-old said. "We've got some vital league games coming up and a cup final to look forward to. Because I've seen the other side of things, I'll not worry too much about what's in the future.

"I'll just concentrate on doing well for Dundee United between now and the end of the season."

United are also represented in the young player shortlist with David Goodwillie competing against Hibernian's Anthony Stokes, Dundee forward Leigh Griffiths and Rangers defender Danny Wilson.

"It shows we have had a good season," Goodwillie said. "It's not finished and hopefully with the final coming up, it will continue. It makes you look better when the team is doing well."
