The British No 1 linked up with Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands to defeat Raven Klaasen of South Africa, and Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-2.

It was an impressive result as Klaasen and Rosol were seeded three while Murray and Rojer are unseeded in the doubles.

The 2013 Wimbledon champion is playing in his first tournament since marrying Kim Sears in Dunblane earlier this month.

It was also a good day for Andy’s older brother Jamie, who enjoyed a men’s doubles victory with partner John Peers of Australia over Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic and Joao Souza of Brazil, 6-3, 6-2.

In the singles yesterday the three seeded players in action, Roberto Bautista Agut, David Goffin and Philipp Kohlschreiber, all advanced to the quarter-finals. Third-seeded Bautista Agut breezed past qualifier Radek Stepanek 6-0, 6-3 and  No 5 seed Kohlschreiber dispatched wild card entry Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4.

Kohlschreiber is a two-time champion, while the 18-year-old Zverev is the youngest of eight teenagers in the Top 200 of the ATP Rankings.

Fourth-seeded Goffin needed three sets to get past Simone Bolelli 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-1 and will next face Kohlschreiber.

Victor Estrella Burgos overcame Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 6-7 (1), 7-5 to set up a match against Bautista Agut, who saved all four break points he faced and hit six aces.

In a first-round match, Pablo Andujar beat Joao Souza 6-4, 6-4. Andujar was runner-up in Barcelona last week and withstood 11 aces to beat Souza.

Roger Federer gave a demonstration of his service skills as he beat Jarkko Nieminen 6-2, 7-5 to reach the quarter-finals of the inaugural Istanbul Open clay-court tournament.

Federer never faced a break point and won 93 per cent of his first serves. He also served nine aces while Nieminen had none.

Federer, who is the top seed, will next play Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who upset sixth-seeded Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 6-3.

Also, fourth-seeded Santiago Giraldo beat wild card entry Andrey Rublev 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to reach the last eight.

Giraldo struggled at times against Rublev, with both players dropping their serve three times. Although Rublev had more aces – seven compared to three – Giraldo won more of his first-service points.

He next plays eighth-seeded Diego Schwartzman, who took less than one hour to beat Jurgen Melzer 6-0, 6-2.

Gimeno-Traver dropped serve once, but otherwise was hardly troubled, using five aces and breaking his opponent’s serve four times.

In Portugal, Robin Haase saved two match-points on his way to a shock 4-6, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 win over top seed Feliciano Lopez in the second round of the inaugural Millennium Estoril Open.

World No 12 Lopez twice served for the match in the second set but Haase dug deep to win both games before dominating the tie-break.

The Dutchman, ranked 89 places below his opponent in the rankings, broke early in the decider and was largely untroubled on his serve as he booked a quarter-final date with number seven seed Nick Kyrgios.

The Australian, who edged past Albert Ramos-Vinolas in a heated first-round tie, needed an hour and ten minutes to see off the challenge of Filip Krajinovic, winning 6-3, 6-3.

World No 174 Nicolas Almagro progressed with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 victory over fourth seed Leonardo Mayer, taking his record against the Argentine to 3-0.

Richard Gasquet, seeded fifth, will meet Almagro in the last eight after comfortably beating qualifier Kenny De Schepper 6-2, 6-3.

Top seed Garbine Muguruza crashed out of the Grand Prix SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem in Marrakech as Kristina Mladenovic beat her in straight sets 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (8/6) to reach the quarter-finals.
